Shadows
Shadows
October 26, 2024

This culinary sage bush leans out over the old rock path of a disassembled laundry line. The holes where strong metal pipes once stood now sprout grass and violets. How I would have loved to use this space for that purpose instead of the awkward laundry lines between the carport and swing set. But also how delightful to have this warm and sunny walkway to stand and admire the back garden from its center, to watch the shadows of plants against the smooth surface of stone, and to reflect on how the infrastructure of our built environment leaves a trace far into the future. This walkway is itself a shadow of its original purpose, one that I have reconfigured into a central vein of movement. So much of my creative work in and outside the garden returns to these shadows, and the process of remaking what is old into something new.
