Hope Is a Garden
Fluffs of butterfly weed seeds fly around the garden. I collected many of them for a seed release ceremony at a mural celebration party last week. When I haven’t been in the garden this summer I’ve been organizing folks in my community to paint an ecologically themed mural designed by another climate activist. It’s truly a group effort, building capacity for future climate action together while we get our hands dirty. The mural has great visibility and overlooks a narrow strip of soil often used as a dumping ground. After the finishing touches are painted next year, we would like to plant a native pollinator garden underneath, bringing more life and care to this previously neglected space. Just as I see butterfly weed sprouting in my neighbors’ gardens, I talk to folks who saw or helped paint the mural and are interested in getting involved with climate action. May these ideas spread far, finding refuge in fertile minds, and getting us closer to a future of collective flourishing.
