Everyone’s favorite fruit
Everyone’s favorite fruit

The red and black raspberries start ripening just after the pie cherries are gone. Within a couple days of the first ripe raspberry we are filling three pint baskets a day and everyone enjoys stuffing their faces. Last fall I tried to strategically lean the new black raspberry canes against the edge of the carport to block the South-side sun. It worked surprisingly well and now we can pick berries from inside the carport during thunderstorms or 90-degree afternoons. We have friends over to pick berries while catching up on art projects, climate action, and garden tours - the best kind of socializing. I always think this is my favorite time of year, but soon there will be blackberries and tomatoes ripening, and my patch of everbearing raspberries grows larger, so the summer is really just getting started.
