Hope Is a Garden
The backyard garden, just at that point before the smaller paths become unpassable. Every year I tell myself I will leave more room between the plants, and yet I compulsively tuck an extra squash plant in here, allow a tomato volunteer to grow there, and everywhere delight in the self-seeding annuals’ clear preferences. The combination of tomato next to squash with bush or climbing beans is echoed again and again, often with potatoes, fennel, or calendula joining the party. I used to pay more attention to companion planting, but now chaos has taken over and a tendency towards combining high and low, climbing up and sideways, with a dash of flowers if possible.
