Hope Is a Garden
Summer red raspberries were the first fruit I successfully grew in the garden. Since then, there have been years when it’s felt like too much: too many plants to prune, pick, and maneuver around for a short harvest of a couple weeks. Adding black raspberries helped a little, with more tartness and a firmer berry that still unfortunately ripens exactly when the summer red raspberries do. Then I heard about raspberries that ripen in the fall and promptly ordered an everbearing variety that fruits on shorter (untrellised) first and second year canes throughout the summer. These new additions are somehow even tastier and have provided garden snacks since June. My plan is to let them spread all around the front garden, for which they are making good progress in their second year.
